Choose Lindos for a car-free whitewashed village under an ancient Acropolis, two sheltered bays and slow, romantic evenings. Choose Faliraki for a long resort beach, big hotels, a water park and lively nightlife close to Rhodes Town and the airport.

Lindos and Faliraki are both on the east coast of Rhodes, both have sandy beaches, and both appear on almost every shortlist for the island. Beyond that, they could hardly be more different.

Lindos is a historic, car-free village of whitewashed houses and old captains’ mansions, built in an amphitheatre beneath a cliff-top Acropolis. Faliraki is a modern beach resort of large hotels, water sports and bars, a short drive from Rhodes Town and the airport. Here is how they compare, from a family that has run a small hotel in Lindos since 1989.

What is the main difference between Lindos and Faliraki?

Atmosphere. Lindos is about beauty and history: narrow lanes, pebble-mosaic courtyards, the Temple of Athena Lindia on the rock above you, and evenings spent over long dinners on rooftop terraces. Greece’s official tourism site describes it as a traditional settlement built amphitheatrically beneath the Acropolis.

Faliraki is a purpose-built resort. In the 1950s the coast here was known as Pachynammos and, according to the South Aegean Region’s tourism guide, had only two houses and a taverna called Faliraki. Today it is one of the busiest beaches on Rhodes, lined with hotels, beach bars and water-sports centres. Discover Greece calls it a hotspot for younger travellers with lively nightlife.

Where are Lindos and Faliraki on Rhodes?

Faliraki lies a short way south of Rhodes Town on the north-east coast, so it is close to the island’s capital and to Rhodes International Airport. KTEL even runs a direct bus between Faliraki and the airport, according to its official timetable.

Lindos is further down the same coast, about 50 km from Rhodes Town. Greece’s official tourism site gives the bus journey from Rhodes as about an hour and forty minutes. The two places are roughly 35 to 40 km apart by road, so you can visit one from the other in under an hour.

If you are staying with us, our private parking sits at the top of the property, off the Rhodes Town road, so you never have to drive into the pedestrianised village.

Which has better beaches, Lindos or Faliraki?

It depends on what you like in a beach.

Lindos has two bays right below the village. The main bay holds two beaches side by side, the larger called Megali Paralia, with shallow water that Discover Greece recommends for families. Round the headland, Saint Paul’s Bay is a semi-enclosed cove of golden sand, named after the little chapel above it. Both feel enclosed and sheltered, with the Acropolis as your backdrop.

Faliraki has a long, open sandy beach with every facility: sunbeds, beach bars and water sports. Just south of the resort are two smaller coves worth a swim. Ladiko is a small sandy bay, and right next to it is Anthony Quinn Bay, a small pebbly beach between rocky headlands that is good for snorkelling. It takes its name from the actor Anthony Quinn, who negotiated to buy the bay while filming The Guns of Navarone on Rhodes.

Is Faliraki still a party town?

Faliraki is still the island’s nightlife centre, but it has changed. In the early 2000s its bar strip made headlines across Europe for drunken bar crawls, and in 2003 the authorities responded with more police, controls on organised pub crawls and a ban on bar music after midnight, according to travel trade reports at the time. Bookings from the party market collapsed, and the resort turned to a broader mix of visitors.

Today you will still find bar streets and clubs in the centre, busy late into the night in high summer. Away from those few streets, Faliraki is a family beach resort, and its large hotels are designed so you rarely need to leave them.

What are evenings like in Lindos?

Slower and, we think, more memorable. The Acropolis is floodlit after dark, and the village fills with the smell of grilled fish and the clink of glasses on rooftop terraces. There are bars and a couple of places to dance, but no big club scene. Most people have a late dinner, a cocktail and a walk through the lanes.

Our own hotel is a good example of the Lindos rhythm. There is no nightclub, no resort animation and no buffet. The bar opens at five, the kitchen closes at ten, and most guests are in bed by midnight and on the path to the Acropolis by eight the next morning. Our guide to Lindos nightlife covers the village after dark in detail.

Which is better for families?

Both work, in different ways.

Faliraki suits families who want everything on site. Many of the big resort hotels have pools and children’s facilities, and Waterpark Faliraki is right in the resort. Its official timetable shows the 2026 season running from 4 May to 26 October.

Lindos suits families who prefer atmosphere to amenities. The main beach is shallow and calm, the village is car-free, and children love the climb to the Acropolis. Plan for steps: the lanes are stepped and cobbled, so a baby carrier is easier than a large pushchair. We have family maisonettes for exactly this kind of trip.

Which is better for couples?

Lindos, for most couples. It is one of the most romantic places in Greece: sunrise over the sea, swims in Saint Paul’s Bay, dinner under the illuminated Acropolis. Faliraki suits couples who want a lively beach holiday with nightlife on the doorstep.

Can you stay in one and visit the other?

Yes, and plenty of visitors do. KTEL buses on the Rhodes Town to Lindos line also call at Faliraki. As of October 2026, KTEL’s official Lindos timetable for summer 2026 had listed 21 departures a day from Rhodes Town to Lindos between 6 July and 10 September. Check the current KTEL timetable for your dates, because the schedule changes several times a year.
